Led veterans look at integrated circuits: a turning point in China's semiconductor history
Abstract: in any case, semiconductors have played a very important role in information, communications, consumer electronics, automotive electronics, industrial electronics and defense electronics. Of course, Shanghai is also the most important protagonist of China semiconductor, and it is also one of the focuses of the author
according to the degree of progress, human civilization can be represented by the devices used by humans at that time, from the ancient stone age, to the bronze age, and then to the iron age. In modern times, the output value of electronic devices made of silicon has exceeded that of steel. Therefore, human society has entered a new era, which is the era of silicon, which represents semiconductor devices. So this time, I will talk about the semiconductor industry by using the visit of semiconductor Shanghai in 2017
as we know, the semiconductor industry in a broad sense refers to devices and related derived industries made of materials from group 3a to group 5a of the periodic table, covering memory components, microprocessors, logic components, optoelectronic devices, detectors and so on. In a narrow sense, the semiconductor industry is usually called silicon semiconductor industry, which is the integrated circuit industry with silicon as the main material
however, semiconductors have played a very important role in information, communication, consumer electronics, automotive electronics, industrial electronics and defense electronics. Of course, Shanghai is also the most important protagonist of China semiconductor, which is one of the key points I want to introduce
(Figure 1. This year's semiconductor Shanghai is very lively, which also verifies the popularity of semiconductors in China)
my origin with Shanghai
my first stop on the mainland was Shanghai in the beginning of 2000. At that time, the company I worked for made a small fortune because of the dividend system of Taiwan stock, in addition to raising funds for studying in Japan, I also want to see what I read about China and her in my previous geography and history textbooks. Of course, this belongs to China before 1949
after the national government came to Taiwan, geography taught the geography of the mainland national government, so China has 35 provinces, because there are 9 provinces in the northeast, Inner Mongolia is divided into 4 provinces, and many geographical names have also changed, Dihua and Urumqi, Guisui and Hohhot, Anton and Dandong, Beiping and Beijing. The history of our religion was basically similar to that of the mainland before 1927, with only a few parts of it slightly different. The Yellow turban bandit rebellion in the late Han Dynasty, the Yellow turban peasant uprising in the mainland, the Yellow nest peasant uprising in the Tang Dynasty, the Yellow nest peasant uprising in the mainland, the unrest in the late Ming Dynasty and the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom in the Qing Dynasty, the roving bandit rebellion and the peasant uprising, the Kuomintang and the Communist Party have very different views of history. Because of the completely opposite political factors in modern Chinese history, not to mention, many people jokingly said that "to see the most objective and ideological textbooks of modern Chinese history, there may be only Hong Kong"
my red China enlightenment was in my college age. I met a Chinese enlightenment teacher, Professor Zhang Yuan of the Institute of history, Tsinghua University, Hsinchu. In order to cultivate our ability to think independently, he let us read the history books of the mainland, through the agitation of different views between the mainland and Taiwan, liberate my thoughts bound in middle school, the ability to read simplified Chinese characters, and broaden our horizons, which were all cultivated during this period, I have an inexplicable connection with Chinese Mainland
life is really wonderful. More than 20 years after graduation from Tsinghua University, I recall what really benefited me in my college career. In addition to my professional knowledge of physics and Engineering Science, teacher Zhang's history and China's Enlightenment undoubtedly played an inestimable role in my life
after coming to the mainland, the common language, but slightly different words, are easy for me to reverse. This is the best place for me to verify what I have learned. It is also the practice of my own vast world. The idea of being free from fetters makes me realize why people in southern China like to expand overseas, why there are many celebrities in southern China, why the north is always happy, and the resilience of people in the West in harsh environments. Without the inspiration of the semester of modern Chinese history 26 years ago, my life might be as flat as most of my peers now
I often think that the reason why Taiwanese people can succeed in Chinese Mainland is that they know and love China's history, geography and culture better than foreigners or mainlanders? Only by recognizing the history and culture of this land can you have a long-term plan here, and you will carefully manage your career and relationships. If you still have a certain ability, it is difficult for you not to succeed, not to mention because you have a long-term plan, you may buy a house here in the early stage, and you have witnessed and enjoyed the dividends of China's rapid economic growth: soaring profits in real estate
(Figure 2 Shanghai is my first stop in China. I witnessed her rise and enjoyed the benefits brought by her rise)
Shanghai has a deep connection with me. In 2005, I settled in Shanghai with my family. At this time, LED chip factories and advanced semiconductor integrated circuit factories are in the embryonic stage of development in Shanghai. Shanghai Blu ray and medium core semiconductor (SMIC) are located in Zhangjiang, Pudong, Songjiang has the tenth factory of lanbao optoelectronics and TSMC. Why would the chip industry, which started almost at the same time, have different results in Shanghai? I think it is closely related to the urban character of Shanghai. What is the gene of Shanghai? Compared with other places, Shanghainese are more worldly. They should be dignified even if they are not rich. They are a little tired of poverty and love wealth. They advocate foreign brands and Western foreign capital and foreigners
many Shanghainese think they are the most superior people in China. Although I don't agree with them very much, it's not too much that they are the luckiest people in China. Because of this, they are less interested in small investment. They are keen on large-scale construction and investment, so the 10 billion level integrated circuit is a high-tech industry, which should be supported gracefully even if it does not make money. The LED chip industry invested by hundreds of millions may be high-tech at the beginning, but it is not profitable and small-scale. The Shanghai government is less interested in small investment, and its support is not superior to that of other cities, except moving or ending investment, There seems to be no other choice for the LED industry in Shanghai
after I left the company I worked for in Shanghai, the boss racked his brains to win the attention of the government. He not only spent a lot of money on Dr. Nakamura as a consultant, but also claimed to manufacture MOCVD. As a result, because the ideal was too advanced and the technology was still an air attic, he could only fake to deal with the government. As a result, he was in prison, which was also a big player in the LED industry at that time, Her experience may be the fate of LED in Shanghai
and the semiconductor wafer factory meets the requirements of Shanghai people for high-end atmosphere and grade, so even if it doesn't make money, Shanghai should support it decently. LED and IC, which are all semiconductors, can see their biggest difference here
where China's semiconductor dream began
the semiconductor industry in Chinese Mainland began not late. The first integrated circuit was developed in 1965. Due to the economic system and the Western blockade of technology, it is not easy to develop
Shanghai is indeed the place where the Chinese semiconductor dream began. Shanghai belling and Shanghai advanced semiconductor (ASMC) were a few semiconductor plants in the 1990s, but they lagged behind western technology for several generations. At that time, the technology was the 0.5 micron process of six inch wafers
entering the 21st century, Shanghai has ushered in the first wave of semiconductor climax. In the first decade, although it has been burning money, it has also aggressively poached engineers from Taiwan. SMIC semiconductor symbolizes the determination of Chinese Mainland to catch up with the West. Such tuition fees, which China can afford, are also very worthwhile! In the second decade of the 21st century, China traded the market for investment, attracting huge investment in advanced processes from semiconductor giants Intel, Samsung and Hynix. With the support of the government, SMIC is also gradually growing. At present, the most advanced 12 inch factory process is only one or two generations behind the west, and its technical capacity is gradually catching up with Taiwan's UMC, At present, the 28nm mass production process has narrowed the gap with liandian. I remember that in terms of 40nm process, liandian began mass production in 2009, while SMIC did not mass produce 40nm until 2013. Now the 28nm mass production is only one year away. It can be seen how great the driving force of market forces and policy determination is
(Figure 3. Dr. Zhang Rujing, the founder of SMIC semiconductor, is the first wave to bring the most advanced IC semiconductor technology to Chinese Mainland, and he is known as the father of semiconductors in Chinese Mainland)
IC design has also begun to blossom and bear fruit, and the IC Design of Hisilicon and Spreadtrum has also entered the world's top 20. China's current IC industry feels a bit like the LED industry pattern from 2010 to 2011. The leading IC technology in the mainland has been close to Taiwan's second-line factories, History is so similar and cruel. Recently, Taiwan's IC boss, Gao Qiquan, the chairman of huaqianya technology, known as the godfather of Taiwan DRAM, and sun Shiwei, the former vice chairman and executive director of liandian, have joined Ziguang group. Shanghai Huali Microelectronics (hlmc) recently poached a 28nm process research and development team with up to 50 people from liandian (UMC), is it very similar to the original led upstream
the IC in 2017 is so similar to the LED in 2010. The only difference is that TSMC is as solid as gold. At present, there is no case of collective job hopping, so mainland semiconductor factories can only look for talents and teams from Taiwan's second tier factories. Therefore, as long as Taiwan maintains its technological advantages and ensures that TSMC's core personnel are not poached by the mainland in large numbers, the process of the mainland catching up with Taiwan's IC technology should not be as smooth as LED. Of course, if cross-strait relations can be reconciled and integrated in tacit agreement in the future, such vicious poaching and zero sum competition will no longer be meaningful. Is there any difference between the most cutting-edge semiconductor technology in Taiwan and Shanghai
(Figure 4. TSMC's position on both sides of the Taiwan Straits can't be challenged at present. Why is TSMC instead of TSMC? Why does the logo wafer have 11 black chips? It can only be sold for a while, and it will be revealed later)
the pattern of China's high-tech industry
this exhibition, I really saw a scientific and technological landscape pushed and integrated by political forces and market economy, This territory may also determine the future of the world's high-tech industry
look at this map, as shown in Figure 5. The economic territory of eastern China is like a bow and arrow that connects the power line to the Pacific Ocean. China's coastline is like the bow back of a bow and arrow. The connection point between the bow string and the bow back is Beijing Tianjin to the North, Guangzhou and Shenzhen to the south. Shanghai's location is like the arrow of a bow and arrow, gathering all China's wealth and resource forces. Shanghai's status in China is unspeakable
(Figure 5 China's economic and scientific and technological strength is like this bow and arrow, accumulating strength to shoot at the world)
the same reason, China's high-tech industry is like this bow and arrow, with their respective division of labor. The core semiconductor technology will be in East China with Shanghai as the center, and the north with Beijing as the core may be the center of China's semiconductor equipment, just like South Korea, Self manufacturing of semiconductor equipment is another of the most important tasks in the development of China's semiconductor industry. Shenzhen and Guangzhou in South China
